Crème de la Crème

I found this heavy organic cream in a collectible glass bottle at Jimbo's Market yesterday. After I use the cream to make ice cream, the decorative cow bottle will make a nice little vase for flowers!

The Best Homemade Ice Cream Recipes

(BEFORE)

(AFTER: Coconut ice cream)

It's super easy to make homemade ice cream, fresh and delicious, using a hand-cranked ice cream maker, such as a Donvier. For best results, keep the cylinder in the freezer for seven hours or longer. Just as the secret to great pizza is a hot oven, the secret to great ice cream is a cold cylinder. I store mine in the spare freezer, so it's always cold enough to use.

Use the best ingredients you can find--preferably organic.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Ingredients:
2 cups heavy cream

2 cups whole or skim milk
Slightly less than 1 cup of sugar (if you don't want to use sugar, experiment with smaller amounts of maple syrup or coconut nectar)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Gently mix ingredients in a large bowl, then pour mixture into ice cream maker
. Crank to mix, and then crank every few minutes for about 30 minutes. After about 30 minutes, enjoy, or transfer ice cream to container and freeze.
Makes about 1 quart

Other flavors to try:
Follow vanilla recipe above, modified by instructions below.

~Chocolate Chip Ice Cream: Add 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips.

~Coconut Ice Cream: Substitute 2 cups light or regular canned coconut milk for the milk.
If you are a fan of coconut ice cream you're in for a real treat!

~Coffee Ice Cream: Add 1 cup of fresh, strong, black coffee, which has been refrigerated, and reduce milk to 1 cup. Add 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips if desired for mocha chip. Either way, this has incredible coffee flavor.

~Cookies and Cream: Add 1 cup of crushed oreos (or other cookies), to ice cream maker during the last ten minutes or so.

~Mint Chocolate Chip: Add 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips and 1/3 teaspoon of mint extract.

~Pumpkin: Decrease milk by 1/2 cup and add 1 cup canned pumpkin and a dash of cinnamon. Good year round (if you can find the canned pumpkin)--why wait for the autumn?!

~Strawberry: Add 1/2 cup of mashed strawberries and 1/2 cup chopped strawberries, fresh or frozen. Or try using peaches instead.

As with any recipe, vary amounts of ingredients to taste.
